We have two major goals. The one is to establish model bacterium whose genome can be designed, aided by the sharing of information and collaboration among the bioinformatics, metabolome, and interactrome units in this institute. The other is to develop a general method of breeding bacteria beneficial for human life. The concept of genomic breeding not only provides a new direction of research for the scientific community but also creates unprecedented opportunities in the field of bio-industry. The process of genome alteration common to both goals uses a Bacillus subtilis strain whose 4.2 megabase pairs genome is plastic and stable. So-called "forced evolution" may mimic rapid genome evolution in nature.
